About Me

My artistic vision centers on creating warm and inviting pieces through the unique use of acrylic paint on canvas, diluted to achieve a watercolor-like texture. I seek to explore God's presence in everything, drawing inspiration from the breathtaking palette of sunsets - a daily masterpiece on display to everyone at no cost. Through my art, I delve into profound themes of faith, joy, and freedom, inviting viewers to experience a deeper spiritual connection.

Artistic Journey

I've always been an artist at heart, even if it took me a while to embrace it. Growing up in the 90s, in Prince George's County, Maryland, I spent countless evenings outdoors, mesmerized by those incredible sunsets have become my artistic signature.

Like many creative kids facing "real world" expectations, I initially chose the safe route - engineering. Practical? Yes. Soul-fulfilling? Not even close. By 2017, I couldn't ignore that creative void anymore. Something was missing, and that something was art.

What began as an after-work and weekend hobby quickly became a lifeline back to my authentic self. Picking up a paintbrush again wasn't just about making pretty pictures; it was like finally being able to breathe after holding my breath for years.

In 2019, I took the leap and began transforming my passion into an entrepreneurial venture. I'm still working towards building a sustainable career with my art, but this isn't just about making money. It's about creating a life where my creativity can truly flourish.

My art isn't a luxury - it's a necessity. I simply cannot exist in a healthy mental state without creating, without surrounding myself with beauty, and without experiencing the deep sense of purpose that comes when I'm in a creative flow.

My work is deeply rooted in my faith, capturing those awe-inspiring moments I tangibly see the presence of God reflected in creation, especially in the magnificent canvas of a sunset sky.

My Process

My creative process starts with seeking inspiration - it's intentional, not random. I draw inspiration from everything around me: the beauty of nature, meaningful scripture passages from my devotionals, thoughts recorded in my personal journal, or even in a song lyric or melody that just seems to resonate.

When an idea clicks, I lock in on it and seek or create reference photo to anchor my mind before I begin to express myself on canvas. Lately, I've been experimenting with AI tools for creating images based on a detailed description of my vision. There's something exciting about merging traditional art with new technology. Typically, however I use a photo I've taken or saved over the years and embellish it to align with my vision once it's on my canvas.

Once my vision is set, canvas prep follows. It's a set process. I gather my tools: colored pencils, markers, graphite, my jar of water, paints, my palette, and various brushes. Then, I select my canvas and position it on the easel. Next, I spend some time just sitting with the blank canvas to acquaint myself with it before I move on to the next step. This routine grounds me before I begin.

My technique is a balance of skill and intuition, and starts with something that might look like chaos to others - spontaneous scribbles and mark-marking. These allow me to overcome the intimidation that often greets me when I stare a blank canvas in the face. They also create an initial grid for me to work from. Next, I photograph these marks and use my iPad to digitally overlay the reference photo, creating a guide for sketching the fundamental form.

The actual painting process is deliberate. Once I select my base and undertone paints, I start with translucent washes using my largest brush, gradually building depth and form. Shadows are blocked in and slowly darkened, allowing the piece to emerge organically.

As the work develops, I move to progressively smaller brushes, transitioning from translucent to semi-opaque paints. Each layer adds nuance and depth. I use opaque paints sparingly in order to maintain the loose, expressive, watercolor-like quality that has come to define my style. I also enjoy how the translucent paints allow the light to bounce back off of the canvas. I try to keep as much of these visible as possible.

These steps typically unfold over 3 to 4 separate painting sessions. It's important for me to step way from my art and return to it with fresh eyes to avoid perfectionism and allow the unique personality of the piece to shine through. Once I'm satisfied with the piece, I start and finish the edges - a final touch that adds sophistication and really rounds out the piece.

The final touch is my signature - my initials formed into a personal emblem of sorts - applied to the lower right corner. Before varnishing, I carefully deliver the painting to my local photographer to capture its essence in its purest form. Lastly, it's just hardware installation, and now the piece is ready for its new home.

Personal Connection

Art flows naturally from somewhere deep inside me - it's my way of expressing myself, learning myself, and honoring the gifts God placed within me. I don't have any fancy art degrees or any formal training, but each piece I create speaks to who I am and represents the joy and freedom I've found in Jesus Christ.

I believe with my whole heart that I was created to create. What drives me is making art that is beautiful and compelling, that brings a piece of nature inside, and hopefully inspires someone who sees it. I want my art to bring a moment of peace and rest to a weary mind, inviting people to slow down for a moment and notice God's divine presence and grace in our everyday lives. And maybe, hopefully, it makes them curious enough to start, or continue, their own conversation with Him about the beauty we see around us and the blessings He has freely given.

Looking Forward

My artistic journey keeps deepening as I focus on capturing and conveying the tangible love and presence of God in life's most ordinary moments. I find inspiration everywhere in nature - from birds singing in the morning to the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze to the simple wildflowers that most people seem to walk right past. In all of it, I aim to acknowledge the divine hiding in plain sight.

Scripture is a continually source of inspiration, as I learn more about and commune with God, I just want to create more - it's hard to explain.

Lately, I've been feeling pulled toward abstract art. Through this new direction, I'm hoping to convey something about eternity - that sense we all have that there's more beyond what we can see - while also acknowledging how limited our human minds are when trying to grasp life outside of time. I want to use abstract forms to create pieces that invite people to ponder the infinite while compelling them to make the most of the tangible life and breath they presently have.

I'm also excited to experience my creativity flowing naturally without a reference photo dictating where I'm headed. This exploration will let me create more instinctively and see what emerges.

Truth is, I don't know exactly where this journey is taking me. With all my art, God tends to reveal the deeper meanings long after I've completed the pieces. So we're all discovering this together - let's see what comes next.
